The surgeon found us at ten to three, still in his cap, with a smile on his face that I wanted to frame.
"Your mother's new kidney made urine on the table," he said. "It started before we closed. It's rare, and it's beautiful."
Maude sat down hard on a plastic chair and put her face in her hands.
"Both of them through," the surgeon said. "Both asleep, both stable. You can see Mr. Carberry in an hour."
I laughed, and then I cried, and then I did both.
Three days later, Ewan Carberry was sitting up in a hospital bed in a gown printed with tiny blue diamonds, glaring at a tray.
"This is a crime," he said.
"It's broth."
"It's beige water with a feeling of regret."
"The nurse says you can have broth, gelatin, and toast."
"The gelatin is orange. Nothing in nature is that orange. I've seen the sun, Rosie."
I sat on the edge of his bed with my coat in my lap.
He had lost some color in his face, and he walked the hall twice a day bent over a pillow.
