Chapter 18: The Seat
The loudspeaker was off, but the office windows were open.
I knew three hundred men were listening through the glass.
Seamus put both hands on the table and leaned toward the captains.
"The night Niall's father died," he said, "my brother was in a hospital bed with a stroke. Stable. Talking. The doctors said a week. And my nephew went in alone at two in the morning and sent the nurse out."
Nobody breathed.
"By three o'clock my brother was dead. And the boy came out of that room with his hands in his pockets and sat in his father's chair the same day." Seamus straightened. "You can do the sum yourselves."
The oldest captain looked at Niall.
Niall looked back and said nothing at all.
I felt it go through the room, the old cold fear, and I understood that Seamus had been feeding on it for nine years.
I picked up the ledger.
"We're going home," I said.
"Mrs. Carrick..."
"You said your piece, Mr. Carrick. He'll give his."
I took Niall's good arm and walked him out through the middle of the captains.
Nobody stopped us.
Kieran fell in beside us, and the yard parted without a sound.
