Garvan moved before I did.
He got one step before the axe head swung up and stopped an inch from my throat.
"Ah," Dex said gently.
"Don't."
"I'm very good with this."
"You've never swung one in your life," Garvan said.
"I did a whole video with one."
"The prop was heavier."
Mari laughed, a bright, silly sound, and went up the stairs.
She came down with Grover.
His wrists were tied in front of him with pink ribbon, and a biscuit crumb still sat in his beard.
"Sorry, Juno," he said.
"She had a nice voice."
"I didn't think."
"You're doing great," I said, because it was the thing to say.
Dex took Grover's elbow.
"We're going for a walk."
"The tower, I think."
"The view is lovely."
"What do you want with the tower?" Garvan said.
"A rope, and a man who's easy to find."
He smiled at me over Grover's shoulder.
