Garvan did not say anything for a long time.
The kitchen darkened around us, and the paper daisies in the window box turned grey.
I lit the stove lamp and sat across from him and waited, because pushing never helped.
"You never sleep," I said at last.
"I sleep."
"I've watched you."
"You lie down and you're up in an hour."
"I sleep on the nights it counts."
He took his hands from his face.
"After the Bear tucks someone in, the suit doesn't stop."
"Meaning what?"
"It walks me to the Bed."
"I lie down in it, in the suit, till the sky goes grey."
"I can't move and I can't wake."
"I feel all of it."
"Feel what?"
He stood and pulled his flannel over his head.
The scars ran across his ribs and back, neat as a quilt's seams, pale in the lamplight.
"Each Lullaby Night it adds a row."
He turned so I could see his back.
"This one is from the early bell."
"This one is from the one before."
"There are so many."
"Thirty-nine."
He said it flat.
"The first ones I could ignore."
"Then I started forgetting words."
