Chapter 16: The Gloved Man

Torsten went down the alley toward him in three strides.

I caught his blanket.

"Wait," I said.

"He cut your line."

"I know what he did. Let him talk."

The man in the grey coat stood very still under the lamp, with his gloves crushed in his fists.

His lips moved again.

"I have an hour," he said. "She gave me an hour."

"Who did?" Berit said.

"The old one. The elder."

He tried to wipe his face with his sleeve and dropped a glove.

Berit bent and picked it up.

She turned it over in the lamplight, and her face changed.

"These are mine," she said. "Third pallet, back shed." She looked up at him. "You ran my second crew for nine winters."

She said a first name.

It was an ordinary name, and he flinched.

"Yes," he said. "I did."

"You left a note and your tool belt on a Friday three years ago. I thought you'd gone to Arizona."

"I went to a dinner at a house on Skyline, Berit. I went in for supper and I did not come out as myself."

His voice cracked and steadied.

"She said I have until six-thirty. Then he has me again."
