Chapter 18: Bats
Torsten came out onto the porch with the dinosaur blanket folded over his arm.
He had a look on his face I had never seen on anybody facing a five-year-old, not a doctor, not a teacher, not me.
He looked terrified.
Eero stopped at the bottom of the steps with his wings out.
They stared at each other.
"You're really tall," Eero said.
"I'm told that."
"Taller than the deputy."
"I know. I try to be polite about it."
Eero considered him, head to one side, black hood slipping.
"You're the van man."
"Yes."
"And Night Man."
"Yes. I'm sorry I watched from the roof. I should have knocked."
"It's okay," said my son kindly. "You were shy."
Torsten sat down on the porch step.
It brought his head about level with Eero's, and I saw him decide to be small.
He held out the blanket.
"This is yours," he said. "It kept me very warm."
Eero took it and sniffed it, then looked at him gravely.
"It smells like clocks."
"It does now."
"Mama says you fix them."
"I do."
"Can you fix a lift bridge?"
"I've never been asked."
"It's the best thing in Duluth," Eero said, and sat down on the step next to him with his wings sticking out on both sides. "It goes up, and the ship goes under, and it goes toot."
"I was here when they built it."
Eero's mouth fell open.
"It had no lift in the beginning," Torsten said. "There was a little car that hung on cables, and it carried people across the canal like a basket. I rode in it, in nineteen-oh-five."
