Chapter 23: Trick or Treat

On Halloween, at 5:36 in the evening, Torsten rang my bell wearing a plastic cape.

It was black polyester with a red collar that stood up behind his shaved head, and it stopped at his knees.

He had pulled the cape over his flannel shirt and his canvas apron.

He had a pair of plastic fangs in his hand.

"Eero told me the rules," he said. "It's not a costume unless it's a bad one."

"You put your real fangs away for that?"

"I put them away for you."

I grabbed the front of that ridiculous cape and kissed him on my own porch.

The deputy downstairs said, "Get a room," in a warm voice, and went back to his candy bowl.

Eero came out of the kitchen in his bat wings and his felt hood, with a pillowcase for a bag.

"Torsten!" he yelled, and hit him at the knees.

Torsten scooped him up effortlessly.

"I'm a bat," said Eero.

"I can see that."

"What are you?"

"A clockmaker."

"You're a vampire."

"Shhh," Torsten said, deadly serious. "That's a secret."

Berit came up the walk in her hard hat with a plastic witch's hat wedged on top.

Her tool belt was full of full-size candy bars.

"I'm a roofer," she announced. "The neighbors will say it's not a costume."

"I'm a roofer too," I said.

I had my hard hat on, my harness over my jacket, and a cardboard tag on my chest that said CAUTION: FALLS.
