Chapter 24: Hunted
The auditorium in Duluth was full of people in black gowns, and one row at the back was full of wolves.
They had come in their best coats, two dozen of them, and sat with their hands folded.
The old man with the cane had worn a tie.
The old healer had come on his arm, ninety years old and a foot shorter than the program she was pretending to read.
"Mattila, Marin," said a man at a podium.
I stood up in a black gown that smelled of dry cleaning.
My knees were not entirely mine.
I crossed the stage, and a dean handed me a leather folder.
A voice at the back of the hall let out a howl.
It was a short one.
It was Joss.
Half the auditorium turned to look, and Joss slid down in his seat with a bouquet of orange tulips in his lap.
Beside him, Hettie stood up on her chair in a green dress and a yellow raincoat, because she refused to go anywhere without it.
