Chapter 23: The Last Hunt
The envoy came at dawn, on foot, across the frozen shore.
He was alone, and he was enormous.
He was a tall man in a long gray coat, with a face weathered like a cliff.
Behind him, on the ice, forty wolves in pairs sat down in a long line and did not move.
I stood on the lodge steps beside Corwin, in a borrowed coat that smelled of cedar, and my new mark burned under the collar.
The pack gathered behind us, quiet and close, two hundred wolves in a half circle.
Joss held Hettie's hand at the back of the crowd.
He had a rolling pin in his coat now, and he had stopped explaining it.
"The Draycott alpha," the envoy said, and his voice was big and flat as the lake. "I carry a message from the pack across the water."
"Say it," Corwin said.
"Your uncle wrote to us when your father died. He told us your seat was weak, your grove was shut, and your beta had your measure." His gaze went over Corwin's shoulder to the pack. "I came to see whether it was true."
