Chapter 22: Mate Mark

I went to the grove alone at dusk, with a wool blanket and my heart in my throat.

Joss had Hettie at the lodge, in a nest of pillows, reading her a bylaw book in a dragon voice.

"Go," he had told me at the door, and then, in a very small voice, "Marin. I'm so glad it's him."

"Me too," I had said, and left before I cried on his scrubs.

The blackthorn was in full bloom, white against the dark, and the whole field smelled of honey and bark.

Corwin waited under the oldest tree, a hundred paces from his father's marker.

It was as big as a house, with branches that touched the ground, and the moon came through the gaps in silver coins.

He was in a plain gray shirt, with no coat, and he stood very still.

The bandage was gone from his side, and the scar showed pink through the open collar.

"You came," he said.

"I said I would."

I set the blanket down on the roots, where the moss was thick.

I turned to face him.

"Nobody set a deadline," I said, "and nobody pushed me. I want your mark."
