Chapter 12: The Mouth That Asked

"One hour," Kaldrith told the steward. "Tell the Saint one hour."

The door closed.

He turned the key and came back across the room to the fire, where Rina sat on the rug in his coat.

He sat down in the deep leather chair and held out his hand.

She climbed into his lap and straddled him, face to face, her knees sinking into the cushion on either side of his thighs.

The fire popped.

Neither of them spoke.

She put her hands on his face and looked at him, the amber eyes, the red-ringed shadows, the small scar at the corner of his mouth.

"What?" he said.

"I'm memorizing you."

He took a long, unsteady breath.

"Then let me memorize you."

He undid the coat, slowly, and pushed it off her shoulders.

His palms slid up her ribs and over her breasts, and she felt the heat of them, the rough care.

She leaned in and kissed him.

It was not like the other times.

There was no hurry in it.

His mouth was warm and slow against hers, and he tasted her lip and the corner of her smile and the line of her jaw.

She pushed her fingers into his silver hair.

He opened his trousers and she lifted onto her knees.

She took him in her hand and held him there, thick and hot against her belly, and looked down between them.
