The letter said the war was over before it began.
Lysander had written it in his own plain hand, on the Crown Prince's stationery.
Rina read it standing in the gatehouse doorway with the snow blowing around her ankles.
The army at Harrowgate was disbanded and sent home.
The old king was in a temple cell under the Primate's guard, to be judged by the lords in spring.
The treaty would be rewritten with the Cinder March sitting at the table as an equal.
The border gates were to be opened by those who lived behind them, and by no one else.
At the bottom, in a different ink, was a line in a looping hand.

Thank you for not letting me be the one who killed him, it said. Come and see us when the roads are clear. Bring bread.
Rina folded it and put it in her pocket.
"Well?" Kaldrith said, from the bed.
"We won."
"Yes."
"I'd like you to say it like you believe it."
"We won," said Kaldrith, and the fur slid off his bare shoulders.
His smile was the slow, new kind that still looked a little surprised by itself.
The snow fell on Ashmoor for a week.
The keep was white on every wall, and the courtyard was white, and the spire of the observatory wore a cap of ice.
The steward had put a fire in every hearth.
On the seventh morning, in the great black bed in the highest room, Rina woke before the sun.
She lay for a while watching the frost on the glass.
Beside her, Kaldrith slept.
He had slept every night since the cathedral.
He slept now on his back with one arm flung across the pillow and his silver hair across his chest.
His horns were pale in the grey light, and his mouth was a little open.
