Chapter 18: The Pond
He didn't step back.
He stood there over me with the lantern throwing his shadow up the wall.
"I'd never do that," he said.
"You did. Two hundred and twelve chapters say you did."
"Then your book is wrong."
"The book was right about the girth. And the pier. And the vial on the council table."
He shut his eyes.
When he opened them, his voice was flat and careful, the voice he used in the great hall.
"Anyone could guess the council," he said. "Anyone who knows Lady Delmar could guess she'd use that vial in the end. Give me something no one could guess."
"Like what?"
"Something only I know."
I pulled the blanket close around me.
I knew exactly what he meant.
I'd known it since the fourth evening, when he stopped at the edge of the lily beds and wouldn't take one step closer.
"The fish pond," I said.
He went white.
Not pale.
White.
"In the old garden, behind the west wing," I said. "You were twelve. It was summer, and the water was green."
