Chapter 50: The Envelopes
That night I asked him again, in bed, in the dark.
"Is there something about Augusto Bellanca I should know?"
He was quiet so long I thought he was asleep.
"He's a captain," he said. "Captains collect. Make him a godfather and he collects for life."
"That's all?"
"That's the table, Lucia. That's all it ever is."
He turned on his side and put his hand on my hip, and he was asleep before I was.
I believed him. Mostly.
He'd spent his whole twenties among those men. Of course he didn't want one of them holding his daughter over the water.
On Friday morning I saw the envelope.
I was in the shop window, pinning a bridesmaid in lilac.
A young man in a white T-shirt went into the bakery. He came out ten seconds later tucking something into his back pocket.
White. Long. The size of a bank envelope.
Then he went into the barber's, and came out tucking another one.
I took the pins out of my mouth.
The baker was behind her counter, wiping it down.
"Who was that?"
"Honey. It's Friday."
"What's Friday?"
She sighed and put down her rag.
"Two hundred dollars. Every Friday. Twenty years. My husband paid it, then I paid it. The barber pays. The shoe shop paid, when it was a shoe shop."
