Chapter 16: The Transfer
On the twelfth of December I opened the bottom drawer.
It was Guadalupe Day, and the crew room smelled of pan dulce.
Somebody had taped a paper Virgin to the whiteboard and set a cup of roses under her.
I had carried the little steel key for nearly four weeks without using it.
At nine that night I rode the elevator up alone, let myself into Royce's empty office, and knelt at his desk.
The lock turned easily.
My father's padlock lay on a folded white cloth, red enamel chipped at one corner, with a paper tag tied to the shackle.
The tag said R. ESCOBEDO in Teo's square hand.
I picked it up and held it in both palms.
It was lighter than I expected.
It was still cold.
I knelt there for some time, and I did not cry, and I did not say anything to it.
Then I saw what lay under the cloth.
It was a company envelope, thick, with BEAUMONT TERMINAL printed in the corner.
