Chapter 14: The Coffee Cans

Boone stood at my gate with his motorcycle ticking behind him and a grocery sack in his hands.

It was half past one in the morning.

His face was gray, and his beard needed trimming, and I felt nothing when I looked at it.

That surprised me more than the gas cans had.

"You can stay on that side," I said.

"I will."

Jesse came up beside me and Boone saw him, and something went across his face.

"You're here."

"I'm here," Jesse said.

"Of course you are."

"Say what you came to say, Boone."

Boone looked down at the sack.

"I went to Hoyt's house tonight," he said. "He was at the clubhouse, and I have a key. The box we carried out Saturday is in his gun room."

"The locked one."

"I picked the lock with a screwdriver. It took me an hour." He gave a short, shaky laugh. "I used to be good at that when I was nineteen."

He pushed the sack through the bars of the gate.

I took it, and I did not open it there.

"Tell me what's in it."

"Two things," he said. "The first is a paper that says you sell the back lot to a company Hoyt owns. It's got your name typed on it and a line for you to sign. My name's already on it, as your husband."

"For how much?"

"One hundred dollars," he said. "It was supposed to be the thing you signed after a bad week."

I felt Jesse's hand close once on the gate.

"And the second?"

"The club's building fund." Boone wiped his face. "Twenty-nine brothers put in a hundred and fifty dollars a month for fourteen months. It was for the clubhouse. Hoyt kept the book himself. I took pictures of every page before I took the pages."
