Chapter 13: A Plate of Eggs and a Locked Door
The brothers rode out of the clubhouse lot at midnight in pairs.
They went to Rusty's house, his mother's trailer, the lake cabin and every motel on Route 66.
Boone wanted to go with them.
Birdie planted herself in front of him and pointed at his sling.
"You'll fall off the bike and give him a good laugh," she said. "Stay with your wife."
"She's not my wife tonight."
"Then stay with your daughter."
Faye drove me home with her jaw set.
Boone followed in Birdie's pickup and parked across the gate, with the engine off and the lights out.
I didn't invite him in.
I didn't tell him to leave either.
I locked every door in the house, then checked the windows I had framed myself.
Faye slept on the couch with a tire iron on the floor beside her.
At dawn I looked out and saw Boone in the truck with his head against the glass.
He had sat there all night with one arm in a sling and had not once come up the drive.
I hated that it moved me.
At seven Birdie called.
"Come to my kitchen," she said. "Tawny has something to say, and she'll only say it to you."
I took my truck.
Boone's headlights came on behind me the whole way to Birdie's house, and he stopped at the curb and stayed in the cab.
Birdie opened the door with her dish towel on her shoulder.
Tawny sat at the kitchen table in a borrowed flannel shirt.
Her eyeliner was gone.
Without it she looked about nineteen, and I made myself remember she was twenty-eight and had helped hurt me.
