Chapter 15: The Chain
Boone's POV
I had known Rusty Cobb for thirty-five years, and I had never once seen him smile like that.
He sat in the truck with his arm on the sill and looked at forty of my brothers with his smile still on.
"Get out of the truck," I said.
"I'm fine here, Boone."
"Get out and hand over the box."
"The box?" He tipped his head. "You mean the money you'd have blown on a mistress and a bar tab?"
Somebody behind me growled.
I raised my good hand and it stopped.
"You lied to me for twenty-three years," I said.
"I told you what I saw."
"You never saw a truck. Ro told me what she was doing that month, and I checked it with her father's old foreman last night."
That was a lie, and a thin one.
I had called the foreman at four in the morning, and he had cried on the phone before he'd said a word.
Rusty's smile slipped a quarter inch.
"Let her come down here and tell me I'm wrong," he said. "Let Ro come out and say it to my face."
I looked back at the porch.
Ramona was standing, with Faye's hand under her elbow, and she was not supposed to be standing.
"Sit down, Ro," I called.
She didn't.
I turned back to Rusty, and my chest went tight, because I understood what he was doing.
He wasn't here to talk to me.
He was holding every eye on the gate while three of his men slid off their bikes and drifted left along the fence.
They were heading for the side of the yard where the porch steps came down.
"Boys," I said quietly. "The fence."
