Chapter 9: Is It Mine
The baby was fine.
The doctor on call told me so at six in the morning, with her hand on my arm and the screen turned toward me.
"A small bleed at the edge of the placenta," she said. "It happens at your age. It will heal if you rest."
"How long?"
"Two weeks off your feet. No lifting, no stress."
I nearly laughed at the stress.
The heartbeat flickered across the screen, strong and quick, and I put my hand over my eyes.
When I took it away, Faye was standing in the doorway in yesterday's scrubs, with her car keys still in her hand.
I had called her from the ER at four in the morning and told her only to come.
"Mom?" she said. "What's going on?"
I told her.
I had planned to say it gently, and all that came out was, "I'm pregnant, baby. Nine weeks."
Faye stood very still.
Then she crossed the room in three steps and put her arms around my neck.
"Oh my God," she said into my hair. "Oh my God, Mom."
"I know."
"You didn't think to tell me?"
"I didn't tell anyone."
"Does he know?"
"No."
"Mom."
"He doesn't get to know. Not after the clubhouse. Not after Tawny."
Faye pulled back and looked at me.
Her eyes were wet, but her face was already hard.
"Okay," she said. "Then he doesn't."
That was my girl.
She wheeled me down the hall at seven, over my protest, because the nurse insisted.
At the end of the corridor, by the elevator, a man in a hospital gown with his arm in a sling stood holding on to the wall.
