Chapter 23: For Both of Us

"Yes," I said.

Damian smiled, wide and unguarded, and I had never seen that smile on him.

Beatrice put both hands to her face.

Grandma, from her chair, said loudly, "About time. I'd like a front-row seat."

"But I have terms," I said.

His mouth twitched.

"Of course you do."

"I pick the dress. I pick the day. And from now on, neither of us hides a thought from the other for longer than a night."

"That's not much of a rule," he said. "You can hear me."

"I'm not talking about hearing. I'm talking about saying it."

His eyes went soft.

"I accept," he said.

Beatrice took Grandma's chair, and Kent took Beatrice's arm, and without another word the whole hall emptied and left us alone at the foot of the stairs.

We climbed them slowly.

It took us a long time, because he wouldn't use the rail, and I wouldn't let go of his hand.

In the suite, the first gray light was coming over the lawn.

He shut the door and leaned on it.

"I have been thinking something for ten minutes," he said. "I'd like to say it out loud."

"Say it."

"You are the best thing that has ever happened to me, and I took three months of silence and a poisoned bag to find you."

I crossed the room.

I put my palms on his chest, and he covered my hands with his.

"That's a lot to say with your clothes on," I said.

"Then take them off."

I did.

I took his robe off his shoulders and let it drop, and he stood in front of me, tall and thin, with the long scar down his thigh.

I kissed it.
