Chapter 12: The Envelope
At the vigil Mass on the thirtieth day, the priest read Stan's name from the pulpit.
I sat in the second pew between Rudy and Joey, with Cas on the aisle.
When we turned to give the sign of peace, Cas took my hand in front of the whole parish and did not let go.
An old woman in the pew behind us made a small noise.
I let her.
Supper was at Wanda's, at the long table with the leaf in, and seven of us sat down.
Wanda took the head.
Lenny took the far end, in a dark suit this time, with the sealed envelope set squarely in front of his plate.
It was cream-colored and thick.
Across the front, in a shaky blue hand I knew, someone had written: For the boys, at Wanda's table. With the girl upstairs in the room.
I did not touch my soup.
"Before anyone opens anything," Cas said.
He stood up.
Every fork in the room stopped.
"I raised Ren's rent the week we buried my father," Cas said.
His voice was steady, and his hands, flat on the cloth, were not.
"I put a notice on her door in January. I tore it up last night."
