Chapter 14: Five Million
"I'm going in with you," said Hanzhou.
"He said alone."
"He said alone because he wants you afraid."
"Then I'll be afraid," said Shen Ke. "And he'll talk. People talk to a mourner. We're furniture."
Hanzhou studied him for a long moment, and then, without a word, he straightened Shen Ke's collar.
"I will be in the corridor," he said. "If you need anything, say my name."
"Which name?"
"Any of them."
The Second Uncle's study was in the west court, a handsome room full of pale silk scrolls and the smell of good tea.
He was kneeling at a low table when Shen Ke came in, in a grey cardigan.
He had the stillness of a man who had never been in a hurry.
"Sit, sit," he said, warmly. "How is your old master?"
Shen Ke had not told him that his old master was ill.
"Resting, Second Master."
"The hospital is a Gu hospital. I sit on its board." The Second Uncle poured tea into a small white cup and slid it across.
