Chapter 13: What He Knew

The foreman took Shelby home with him at one in the morning.

His wife was waiting on the porch in a robe, and she held the car door open without asking a single question.

Magnus and I climbed the stairs of the loft in silence.

Moby went up ahead of us and lay down across the doorway.

I stood in the kitchen where I had sat on the counter two nights before.

My jeans were still on the chair.

"Say it," Magnus said. "Whatever it is. You've been holding it since the pier."

"You walked past me in that hallway."

"Yes."

"You knew exactly who I was. You'd seen my name on the sheet, you knew whose girlfriend I was, and you knew what Trevor was."

"I knew."

"And I stood in a parking lot and proposed to you, and you let me."

"I told you to wait until you felt different."

"That isn't telling me." My voice came out harder than I meant it to. "You said Trevor would call you a convict and wouldn't be lying. You gave me half the truth, with a straight face, and I took it because it sounded honest."

He didn't flinch.

"I never lied to you."

"No. You never told me, either."

"No."

"Do you know what I did for four years?" I said. "I defended him. I told his friends you must have done something terrible, because why else would a family hate you like that. I was sorry for him, Magnus. Every Christmas I was sorry for him."

"I know."

"Then why didn't you say it at the courthouse? Before I put on your ring?"

He looked at his hands.

"Because I wanted you to marry me," he said. "And I thought that if I told you, you wouldn't."
