Chapter 11: The Kitchen

Celia did not blink.

"Of course it isn't his," she said. "His is at home. I brought mine. I drink the same tonic, we share the recipe."

"You said you left it in the car," Ezra said.

"I said car, I meant home. I'm tired and you're all staring at me. This is mine."

"Then bring his."

"I will. In the morning, once I've found it."

The Seer's staff struck stone.

"At dawn," she said, "the Seer's witness will search the Harwick house and the Penhallow house, both, and every car on either property. Until then the girl Celia sleeps in my cottage under my roof."

"She is my daughter," my father said.

"She is a girl who drank from a flask in my hall," the old woman said, "and then lied about whose it was. Under my roof, Dunstan, or under a Moon Court summons. Choose."

My father said nothing.

Celia let two elders lead her out.

At the door she looked back at me.

She did not smile this time.

I wanted to be glad.

All I felt was cold.

Jasper was carried to the Seer's cottage too, in his chains, with his mother walking beside him.

As he went, he turned his head.

"Thank you," he said, almost silently.

I looked away.

I did not owe him anything.

I was not ready to look at what I felt.

That night the Black Fork lodge was quiet.

Clover had gone to bed early with a pot of tea.

I could not sleep.

At midnight I went down to the kitchen in my socks, and Ezra was already there.

He stood at the counter in a gray shirt and bare feet, cutting a loaf of bread into thick slices he was not going to eat.
