Chapter 17: Beckett
"Then come to my door and knock," I called back.
Beckett looked at the river between us.
It was the coldest week of the year so far, and the Tamarack was running high and gray.
For a second I thought he'd turn around.
Then he walked down to the gravel bar and waded into the shallows in his good coat and boots.
He came out on my side soaked and shaking.
He'd never once crossed that river for me in fifteen years.
He came up the bank and stopped at the bottom of my porch steps.
He looked at the gasoline stain on the wood.
"I heard you howl," he said. "Last night. From my window."
"Everybody heard."
"Dad said it was Scanlon's wolves running the line."
"Did you believe him?"
Beckett didn't answer that.
He wiped the river off his face with his sleeve.
"I asked her," he said. "About her father."
I waited.
"I asked her what he was doing at the fork that night." His voice was rough.
"First he was in Boise at a mill. Then he was here, but only to help Dad."
"Then she'd never heard of any fork."
"In ten minutes," I said.
