Chapter 12: The Dress
The dress was green.
Hattie had driven forty minutes to a rental shop in the next county, held it up in the doorway of the boathouse, and said, "If you're walking into that woman's party, you're doing it in emerald."
It was silk, with a low back and a skirt that moved when I did.
On Friday night I stood in front of the long mirror by the stove and zipped it up as far as I could reach.
"Can you get the rest?" I said.
Conway had been sitting on the couch pretending to read a boat catalogue.
He put it down.
He came up behind me and drew the zipper the last six inches slowly, one tooth at a time, and I watched him in the glass.
His eyes had gone dark.
"You can't wear this to a party," he said.
"Why not?"
"Because I won't be able to look at anyone else."
"That's the point."
"The point is to make Eleanor sweat."
"I can do both."
He laid his palm flat against the bare skin of my back, and I felt it all the way down.
I shivered.
"Conway."
"Yes?"
"Don't wrinkle it."
"I'll be careful."
He was not careful.
He kissed the side of my neck, then my shoulder, and when I turned my head he caught my mouth with his.
His hands slid down over the silk, over my hips, and gathered the skirt in his fists.
He pushed it up my thighs.
"Hands on the mirror," he said.
I put them there.
The glass was cool, and my own face stared back at me, flushed, with my lips parted.
I heard his belt.
He pulled my panties down to my knees and ran two fingers through me, and I moaned.
