Chapter 18: The Smithy

Marlis's POV

My father ate three bowls of stew standing up, and he would not sit until every wolf in the Ninth had been fed.

The smithy yard had a long table in it, built for the harvest supper, and the whole valley came to fill it.

The Ninth sat shoulder to shoulder with the Greyfen pack.

The old hands passed the bread, and the baker's boys fought Wick for the last pie.

The pack horn lay in the middle of the table among the dishes, forgotten.

For one hour nobody mentioned two thousand wolves.

"I like her," Brigid told my father, with her mouth full, and nodded at me. "She's reckless and stubborn and she wants to carry everyone's pack."

"Her mother was the same," said my father.

"Did she have a temper?" Brigid asked.

"She once threw an anvil."

"At you?"

"At a Collar." He smiled into his bowl. "He had the manners to duck."

Brigid roared with laughter.

Garreth sat at the end of the table with his ribs strapped under a clean shirt, hardly eating.

He was grey under the bruises.

Half his face was swollen and purple, and he had not complained once.
