Chapter 17: Four to Four

Imogen's POV

We sat in the back of his car at ten to six, with the streetlights still on and the Foundation building ahead of us.

Nathaniel hadn't slept.

Neither had I.

"There's something I have to say before we go in," he said.

"Then say it."

"For four years, nobody in my family would sit beside me."

I turned to look at him.

"Not at Christmas, not at my mother's grave, not at the hospital when my wife was buried. They moved their chairs."

"Nathaniel."

"You sat at my brother's table for five Christmases. You passed him the potatoes. You toasted my father."

His voice was level, and his hand on his knee was not.

"I didn't know that you existed in any way that mattered. I only knew a woman who sat on the other side of the room and smiled at them."

"I didn't know," I said. "I didn't know any of it."

"I know you didn't."

"Then why say it?"

"Because I hated you for it." He looked straight ahead. "Before I'd ever spoken to you, I hated you. And then you stood in the rain and told me no, and I stopped."

I put my hand over his, and he turned his palm up and held on.

"Thank you for saying it," I said.

"It's not nice."

"It's true. I'd rather have it true."

His grip tightened once.

Then the driver opened the door.

The boardroom had a table for twelve under a dead chandelier, and every chair was filled.

Gerald sat at the head in a charcoal suit, with the gold watch on the blotter in front of him.

Colby sat on his left.

He had not shaved, and his skin looked gray under the lights.

He didn't look at me.

The gray man with the pin sat across from them, and next to him, three board members who wouldn't meet Nathaniel's eyes.
