Chapter 23: Not for the Contract

I walked until the rain soaked through my coat, and then I called Bridget, because I had nowhere else to go.

She was at the diner on Spruce in under ten minutes, in pajama pants and her work clogs, with her red hair standing straight up.

She slid into the booth across from me and looked at my face.

"Pancakes," she said to the waitress. "Two stacks. She's had a night."

"Bridget."

"I'm listening. I'm also eating."

I told her about the second page.

She stopped chewing halfway through.

"Wait," she said. "Wait. He gave you half of his company?"

"Half of everything. Before we were even married."

"And you're sitting here with me."

"I'm thinking."

"Imogen." She put her fork down. "That man signed away his exit on the first night, in a penthouse, in front of nobody. He didn't tell you because he thought it would feel like a leash."

"I know."

"He cried on your kitchen floor."

"I know."

"What exactly are you thinking about?"

I turned my coffee cup in its saucer.

"Whether I'm choosing him, or whether I'm just grateful," I said.

Bridget looked at me for a long moment.

"Okay. When Nathaniel came into the lobby last week, and Colby said that thing about the photographs, what did you do?"

"I asked him if it was true."

"And when he said yes, did you want to leave?"

I thought about it.

"No," I said slowly. "I wanted to scream at him until he explained it. I wanted him in the room."

"Then you're not grateful," Bridget said. "You're in love with a liar who's trying to stop."

She stabbed a pancake.

"Eat. And then go home."

I ate.

The elevator opened into the penthouse at dawn.

The living room was gray with early light, and Nathaniel was sitting on the floor with his back to the sofa, holding his phone with my message still on the screen.

He had not moved since I left.

He stood up fast when he saw me, and then stood still.
