Chapter 6: Not Hiring

By Monday night, the tabloid had printed my face on every newsstand cover in Queens.

Lena made me eat a sandwich on a stoop while she pointed them out.

"The cousin read it," she said, holding up her phone. "Your rider says you can't talk about the wedding for five years. Half of it isn't enforceable. He says don't talk to press and don't sign anything else."

"Fine. I won't."

"Maddie." She stopped on the sidewalk. "You didn't leave a number for him."

"That was the rule."

"I know it was the rule. I'm saying it out loud so you hear it."

I heard.

I walked the rest of the way with my hands in my pockets.

Lena had a studio in Queens with a pull-out couch.

I had slept on it all week, and I still did not feel like a person.

On Tuesday I put on my good blazer and went to a hotel on Fifth, where I'd done three weddings the year before.

The events director kissed my cheek at the door and called me a hero.

Then her phone buzzed, and she looked at it and sat down very slowly.

"Maddie, I'm so sorry. Somebody from Mr. MacIntyre's office just called our owner."

"Called him about what?"

"About whether we're the kind of hotel that hires a woman who ruined a man in front of nine million people."

"I ruined nothing. He had a rider in my bouquet."

"I believe you," she said, looking at the carpet. "It doesn't matter."

By Thursday that sentence had been said to me four times.

Four people in four lobbies said it, and none of them would meet my eyes.
