Chapter 8: Cliff
Sabrina stopped ten feet from us.
For a second she looked like she might turn around.
Then she tossed her hair back over one shoulder.
"Yes," she said. "I did."
A nurse at the desk said, "Oh my God," under her breath.
"You went through my phone," Clifford said.
"You left it on the couch. It was ringing."
"It stopped ringing. I answered it."
"And then you sat there staring at nothing for ten minutes," Sabrina said. "In the middle of our movie. So when you went to get the popcorn, I fixed it."
"You fixed it."
"Your mother told me all about her, Cliff. The money. Penn Station. How long it took you to get out of bed after."
Her voice went high and wobbly.
"I wasn't going to let her do that to you again."
"My mother told you to block her."
Sabrina's eyes flicked sideways.
Cynthia had come out of the curtain behind us.
She stood by the empty bed with her wrap around her shoulders and said nothing.
"She said it would be kinder," Sabrina said. "For everyone."
Clifford looked at his mother.
Cynthia looked back at him, calm as a lake.
"It was kinder," she said.
He put his phone in his pocket.
He turned back to Sabrina.
"We're done," he said.
The whole emergency room heard it.
Sabrina laughed, like he'd made a joke in bad taste.
"You're breaking up with me? In an ER? On the night of our engagement?"
"There isn't going to be an engagement."
"For her?" She pointed at me on the stretcher. "Look at her, Cliff. She's got a hospice bed waiting. She'll be gone by Christmas."
