Up above us, the bell stopped.
I heard it end as a dull thud through the water.
One looked at me for one more second, and then he kicked up toward the light.
I came up after him, gasping, and grabbed the edge of the pool.
Eighteen was coughing in the shallow end with Nick's hand on her back.
Three was up, wiping his eyes and swearing.
On the screen over the chair, five numbers burned under Garson Langan's face, every one of them lit.
"Well done, house," he said.
He wasn't looking at the house.
He was looking straight at me.
One climbed out at the steps with water pouring off his jersey.
He shook out his cap, put it back on, and tugged the brim down hard.
"Twenty years," he said to Three, and laughed. "Told you it was lucky."
At ten that night the Back Door came on.
Five sat on the white couch in a bright blouse, with her reading glasses on their chain.
