Chapter 21: The Showroom
I looked up at the speaker on the stairwell wall.
"Leave my son out of this," I said.
The speaker hummed, and nobody answered.
The men in black masks came up the stairs from below and lifted One onto a stretcher.
One of them picked up the cap from the step and laid it on his chest.
Then they carried him down past the P3 landing, under camera 31, and out of sight.
Nick put his arm around me, and Three put his around Eighteen, and the four of us stood at the lobby door.
Four numbers were left on the strip that night, and none of us slept.
At ten the next morning I stood at the Wall with the three of them behind me.
Garson Langan appeared, smiling, and touched his bracelet.
"I'm not asking yet," I said.
He studied me.
"The house answers one question each day, Fourteen," he said. "The day ends at midnight."
The Wall went dark.
"You're saving it," Three said.
"He hasn't said the last rule yet," I said. "I'm not spending my question before I hear it."
