Chapter 13: Leif's POV
Leif's POV
I asked for a minute on Monday, and then I took three days.
Dale had reached the duplex in four minutes flat.
Nils had been there in six.
I sat in my car in the school lot with the heater running and told myself jokes.
None of them were funny.
On Tuesday I refereed a freshman dodgeball game and could not remember one score.
On Wednesday I drove past the Longfellow duplex twice and did not stop.
By Thursday night I had a bit worked out, and I planned to open with it.
I was in the club's equipment room after practice, counting broom heads for the bonspiel.
Britt pushed the door open and shut it behind her.
She stood with her back against it, still in her team sweater, with her gray eyes steady.
"You haven't said anything," she said.
"I've said plenty," I said.
"I told Nils 'nice draw' four times tonight."
"Leif."
"I had a bit," I said.
"It was about how gym teachers are going to be insufferable now. I was going to do the voice."
She did not laugh.
She crossed the room, took the clipboard out of my hands, and set it on a shelf.
"Do the voice," she said.
I opened my mouth, and nothing came out.
That had not happened to me since the sixth grade.
"I'm forty," I said, finally.
"I coach other people's kids. I've handed out eighteen years of participation ribbons."
"I never thought I'd be the one waiting in the parking lot after the game."
My voice cracked on the last word, and I hated it.
She stepped in close and put both palms flat on my chest.
