Chapter 18: The Vote

I had my hand over the hole in my brother's shoulder before I knew I'd moved.

"Ro," Donal said, white to the lips. "Ro, it's okay. It doesn't hurt."

"Shut up."

"It really doesn't," said Donal.

"That's how you know it's bad. Shut up."

The green door crashed open behind me.

Mal came through it with a gun in his hand and took in the street, the blood and the receding van in one look.

"Tadhg," he said.

The big man was already there.

He lifted my brother off the pavement in both arms.

"The elder's car," said Mal. "Take him to Mass General, and take the nurse with you. Tell them a man was shot at a door, nothing else."

"Aye."

"I'm going with him," I said.

Donal's good hand clamped on my wrist.

"No," he said. "Stay."

"Donal."

"Stay and make them count it. Please. Don't let me have done that for nothing."

He looked about eight years old.

I kissed his forehead hard and let go of his hand.

Tadhg carried him to the elder's car with the nurse running behind, and the taillights went away down the hill.

I stood in the road with my brother's blood drying on my palms.
