Chapter 14: The Bar on the Window

Kit went up the east wall of the lodge with his fingers in the mortar and his heart going.

Through the bedroom door he had heard every word: twenty drops, and "they said keep dosing."

In another minute Ewan would come back through that door with the ledger in his fist and a question in his eyes, and Kit would have to answer it with nothing in his hands.

A bitter smell on a cuff was not proof.

A scrap of paper was not proof.

A councillor with a sleeping draught in his bedroom, and the dead healer's name on the label, would be proof.

He pulled himself over the gutter onto the slates and lay flat in the snow, breathing.

Dawn was a grey line behind the pines.

He crawled along the ridge toward the west wing, where the council kept its rooms for the fortnight.

Three chimneys along, he found a boot print, fresh, with the same heel as the one he had smelled in the snow outside the cabin.

Beside it was a skid mark where a man had knelt to take aim at a window.

The old king's window.

Kit's shoulder throbbed in sympathy, and he followed the prints to the end of the roof.

The last window on the third floor had an iron bar across it and a lamp burning behind.

He knew whose room it was before he leaned over the sill.

Bitter leaf, thick and sour, poured out of the crack.
