Chapter 19: The Eve of the Moon Table
Ewan met the elders in the lodge kitchen at dusk the night before the moon, with the door barred and Dorrie's kettle on.
There were six of them, the youngest past seventy, and they had walked the last mile on foot through the drifts.
They sat around the scrubbed table in their wet coats, and none of them looked at him as a boy.
"We came because you sent for us," said the eldest, a white-haired woman with a stick across her knees. "Not because the council did."
"The council did not send for you."
"No. Merritt Lund wrote to say we were no longer needed." She looked at the fire. "Your father would have had him hanged."
"He doesn't know you're here."
"Then he's a bigger fool than he was."
Ewan did not sit.
He had practised the next part for nine nights in his head, and now it came out plain.
"My father was poisoned."
He laid the black ledger on the table and opened it to the last page.
He set the brown scrap of label beside it, and the dark glass bottle from Merritt's rooms.
Nobody said anything.
The old wolves bent over the page, one by one, and a man with a bad hip crossed himself with two fingers.
"Silver filings," the eldest said at last. "In the doses. That's not medicine, that's murder."
"I know."
"Who gave it to him?"
"The councillor who keeps the Crown's seal on his desk. The one who has called the Table."
The kettle began to whistle.
