Chapter 20: The Moon Table

"It was mine to say," Kit said again, and he did not raise his voice.

Ewan lay under him on the floor of the library in a drift of ruined books, still locked to him, and did not try to look away.

"Yes," he said.

"You took it."

"I took it."

"Say why."

"Because I couldn't stand there tomorrow and watch you tell it to a hundred wolves who want you dead." His voice cracked. "Not alone. Not as the only one who knew."

Kit's jaw worked.

"You should have asked me."

"I know."

"You should have asked, Ewan."

"I'm asking now." Ewan's hands came up, open, and rested on his hips. "Will you still say it? Because it's yours. They only heard it from me. They'll never have heard it from him."

For a long moment Kit looked down at him.

Then the grey in his eyes shifted.

"I'll say it," he said.

"Thank you."

"Don't thank me, you arrogant son of a bitch."

"I won't."

"And you're sleeping on the floor tonight."

"I'm on the floor now."

Kit laughed despite himself and bent and put his forehead against the king's.

The Moon Table stood in a ring of black pines behind the lodge, on a shelf of rock above the valley.

It was a circle of nine flat stones around a bonfire, each one worn smooth by a thousand years of councillors' hands.

Three hundred wolves stood in the snow outside the ring, and the winter moon rose enormous and white through the branches.
