Chapter 21: Silver Teeth
Kit was already moving when the grey wolf left the ground.
He threw himself sideways, and the jaws closed on empty air where his throat had been.
The wind of it hit his face, hot and rank with bitter leaf.
He rolled in the snow and came up on his feet.
"Seize him!" Merritt's voice came out of the wolf's mouth, thick and strange. "The rogue attacks the Table!"
The six council wolves lunged into the ring.
"Hold," Ewan said.
He had not shifted.
He stood between them and Kit with his arms out and his eyes solid gold, and the sound that came out of his chest made the nearest wolf drop its chain.
"This is a quarrel between a councillor and the man he named," he said. "By the law of the Table, nobody enters it."
"Majesty," one of them began.
"Nobody."
Garth came out of the crowd at a run and planted himself at the king's shoulder.
The eldest raised her stick, and five old wolves came to stand beside her.
The six council wolves looked at one another and backed off.
That left a ring of firelit snow, and a moon, and two creatures in it.
Kit tore off his shirt.
He was shaking all over, and it was not with fear.
