Chapter 22: The Morning After
I woke in his bed at ten on Sunday morning with the skylight full of white winter sun.
He was already awake.
He lay on his side with his head on his arm and looked at me, and I did not know how long he had been doing it.
"Good morning," he said.
"You're staring," I said.
"I am," he said.
"I'm making up for ten weeks of not."
I stretched, and the sheet slid down, and his eyes followed it.
My left wrist lay on the pillow between us, bare, with the mark black on it in the daylight.
He did not look at it.
He looked at my face.
It was the first time in days that I had woken without a plan, a dean, or a tide table.
"Tonight I decide," I said.
"I know," he said.
"Not yet.
"Right now it's Sunday morning, and it's light, and nobody on this island is coming to the door."
"Is that a proposal?" he said.
"It's an order," I said.
I sat up.
The strap lay on the nightstand, where I had put it down the night before beside the brass dish.
It was the wide brown leather one, creased from fifteen months of my wrist.
I picked it up.
I turned it in my hands, and felt its weight, and the old warm smell of it.
Then I looked at Elias.
"Give me your hands," I said.
His eyes went to the strap.
I watched him understand it.
His throat moved, and his face went still, and something under the stillness lit.
"Liv," he said.
"Hands," I said.
He gave them to me.
He held them out together, wrists crossed, palms up, with the white hook of scar on the left.
I wound the leather twice around both his wrists.
I pulled the buckle through and drew it snug, not tight, and he watched my fingers do it.
