Chapter 9: After the Tide

"Liv, I know you're up there," Caden said again.

His boot hit the bottom step.

I was naked on a pile of canvas with a man's arms around me, and the lamp was lit, and the loft had one door.

Elias moved before I did.

He rose in one smooth motion, pulled his jeans on and caught his sweater off the boards, and handed me mine and my leggings without a word.

"Dress," he said, very low.

"I'll go down."

"No," I said.

"Liv."

"He came up my stairs," I said.

"I'm going down."

I pulled my sweater over my head.

My hands were steady, and that surprised me more than anything.

Elias looked at me for a long breath.

Then he nodded once and lifted the bolt.

The door opened on the dark landing.

Caden stood on the third step with his flashlight in his fist and his team jacket zipped to the chin.

He lifted the beam.

It lit Elias in the doorway, shirtless, in his jeans, with his hair wild.

Then it found me behind him, with my sweater inside out.

Caden's face went slack.

Then it went red.

"I knew it," he said.

"I knew it.

"You said you weren't."

"I said I didn't want you," I said.

"I said it on the dock.

"You were just standing too far away to hear."
