Chapter 28: Five Birthdays

On Saturday night, the house on Hutchinson Street smelled of roux for the first time in five years.

Gabe had cleaned it.

He had cleaned it so hard that the kitchen floor looked wet.

He had hung a string of paper lanterns across the dining room that he had clearly bought at the drugstore.

Lou walked through the front door in her yellow dress and stopped.

"Is this your house?"

"It's our house," Gabe said. "It's where you'd sleep, if you wanted to. You'd have your own room."

"Does it have a dog?"

"Not yet."

She went through it like an inspector.

She opened every cabinet, tried every chair, and looked under the bed in the big bedroom, where I had to bite my lip.

At the end of the hall was a closed door.

She put her hand on the knob.

Gabe said, "That one's a room I'd like to make into yours."

"What was it before?"

He glanced at me.

I nodded, once.

"It was a room for a baby," he said. "We had a baby who didn't get born, before you. He was your brother. His name was never said out loud, because it hurt, but I'd like you to know there was one."

Lou thought about that, with her whole forehead.
