Chapter 15: The Seat
Ansel's POV
The boardroom had not changed since my father's day.
A long walnut table stood in the middle, with twelve chairs and a brass lamp at each place.
My grandfather Tadeusz hung over the sideboard in oil, with a cutting wheel in his hand and no smile.
I came in at ten minutes to ten in my black suit.
Neve came in behind me and sat in the last row of chairs against the wall, where family sat when they were not on the board.
She had worn the grey coat.
She did not look at me, and I understood that she was giving me the room.
My mother sat at the head of the table with a folder under her hands.
My uncle sat on her right.
The rest of the board fell in along the sides, eight men and one woman who had known me since I wore short trousers.
"Thank you for coming," my mother said.
Nobody answered.
"I will be brief. A year ago I proposed that the family's real property, the Strip District buildings and the chapel hall, be placed in a trust under my chairmanship. My son declined."
She turned a page.
"Since then the family has been embarrassed in public. His wife has abused the hospitality of this parish. A woman who is not family has been pensioned from the company's accounts."
"From my own accounts," I said.
"From the family's."
"Mine, Mother. For eleven years."
She did not look at me.
"I move that Ansel Kowalczyk be removed as head of the company," she said, "unless he signs the trust papers today."
My uncle cleared his throat.
The woman on the board looked down at her hands.
I had known this was coming since the stairwell.
I had lain awake in a hotel bed beside my wife and run the sentence a hundred ways.
*I will sign. I will give her the property. It is only buildings.*
