My grandmother's table seated thirty on Christmas Eve, and it was full.
She had pushed three tables end to end across her front room and covered them with her best oilcloth and red paper napkins.
There was a roast pig, and a pot of bean soup, and rice and sweet potatoes and a ham that someone had glazed with pineapple.
My mother had baked four hundred rolls.
Both sets of mothers were there.
Dean's mother was a thin gray woman with her hair pinned up.
She sat at my grandmother's left hand and had not stopped looking at her son since she walked in.
Manny's mother sat at the right with her sleeves pushed up, already telling my grandmother how to cook the pig.
My grandmother said, "Hm."

The cousins had come, Higa and Rapoza, a dozen of them, crowded together on the long benches with their wives and husbands.
Every one of them had stared at me when they came through the door.
