Chapter 14: The Agent
Gaspard Lachapelle woke at six on Friday and reached across the bed for a man who was not there.
His hand lay on the cold sheet for a while.
It had been twenty-three days since the couch, and the loft had never been so quiet.
He got up and made coffee and drank it standing, with his back to the window.
They had texted since then.
Short messages, mostly about hockey, and one at two in the morning that said only, Are you awake, and one reply, Yes.
He had not asked what Nash wanted to say.
He did not trust what he would answer.
Practice ran until noon.
Afterward the Montreal general manager's assistant stood in the dressing room door and said the office, please, in the voice of a nurse delivering news.
The office had a long window and a longer desk.
On the desk lay a contract, eight years, with the captain's letter printed on the cover page.
"Sit," the general manager said.
"I will stand."
"As you like." The man tapped the pages. "It is the best offer we have ever made a player. It is yours the day Brannagh signs the trade."
