Chapter 27: Carrie
I sat down on the edge of the desk, which took some doing at thirty-five weeks.
"Is that what you think?" I said. "That she's alone if you go?"
"I know it."
"Carrie, your mother has a son next door, a whole crew she feeds twice a day, four teenagers she's already adopted, and a grandson coming in five weeks."
"Grandson," she said.
"That's what she calls him. You've heard her."
"She's not even... he's not even..."
"Tell her that. I dare you."
Carrie laughed, wet and miserable, and then she put her head down on the desk.
"I can't say it to her face," she said into the blotter. "I'll cry, and she'll cry, and then she'll make me a casserole about it."
"Then say it at dinner. Tomorrow's Friday."
"In front of everybody?"
"That's how this family does everything," I said. "You told the whole bar I bought a fridge thermometer."
She lifted her head.
"Will you sit next to me?"
"I'll sit next to you."
On Friday the crew ate first, the way they always did.
The four apprentices ate standing up at the counter with them now, burned fingers and all.
