Chapter 11: Staying

Jude opened his mouth, and I said, "Yes."

Posy looked at me hard.

She was five and she took her contracts seriously.

"Yes, you're staying?" she asked.

"Yes, I'm staying."

"For how long?"

"A long time," I said, and over her head I saw her father's face go very still.

"Okay," Posy said.

"Then can we have pancakes for school?"

"We can have toast for school," Jude said, "and pancakes on Saturday."

"Daddy kissed you," Posy said.

"He did," I said.

"Is he your boyfriend?"

I opened my mouth.

I looked at Jude, who had gone red from the collar of his work shirt to his hairline.

"Ask him," I said.

Jude crouched on the stair so he was level with his daughter.

"I'm Bridie's friend," he said, carefully.

"And I would like to be more than that, if she lets me."
