Chapter 14: Not This Bed
The boxes took an hour, and the bed took one look.
Iris had carried Posy off to her house at five with a duffel and a lie about a sleepover, and the door had shut on the two of us and the dark.
Callie's sweaters went into cartons.
Her books went into cartons, and her rowing medals, and a lamp.
Jude carried them to the porch without a word and came back each time with his face a little more open.
The last carton was gone.
The room stood empty except for the bed, which was wide and made up in a quilt the color of oatmeal.
I stood at the foot of it with my hands in my back pockets.
"You said never in here," I said.
"I did."
"You said it the first night, like a lock," I said.
"I did."
He came up behind me and put his hands on my shoulders.
"I'm taking the lock off."
I turned around.
"Not in this bed, Jude," I said.
I said it in his own flat voice, the one he'd used in my doorway that first week.
"That's the rule.
"Say it to my face."
His mouth twitched.
"Not in this bed," he said.
"Then break it."
He bent and picked me up, one arm under my knees and one behind my back, as if I weighed what a coat weighs.
I put my arms around his neck.
He carried me around the side of the bed and set me on my feet in the lamplight, and neither of us looked at the quilt.
"Take your shirt off," I said.
He did.
I took mine off after.
I had a small brown bottle of almond oil in my jacket pocket, from the kitchen shelf, and I put it in his hand.
"On my stomach," I said.
"Take your time."
I lay down on the quilt, naked, with my cheek turned toward the window.
