Chapter 16: The Blue Coat
Bridie's POV
I didn't tell Jude where I was going.
I dropped Posy at the school door at eight, watched her run in with her rabbit under her arm, and drove his truck across the peninsula to the West End.
Lena lived on the second floor of a brick building on a street of old maples.
I had her address from the back of a Christmas card in the hall drawer.
I climbed the stairs with my hands in my pockets so she wouldn't see them shake.
She opened the door in a cream silk robe with her dark hair brushed shining.
She didn't look surprised.
"Bridie," she said.
"What a treat.
"Come in, honey, it's freezing."
I stepped over the threshold.
The hall was narrow and pretty, with a mirror and a brass dish on a console table.
A woman's blue wool coat hung from the third hook.
I knew it before I touched it.
It had a rowing patch on the sleeve, and a loop of gray thread at the cuff where a button had gone.
I turned the collar over.
Sewn inside, in laundry-marker block letters that I had seen on Posy's mittens, it said C. MADDOX.
