Chapter 14: Left Turn

The lodge is thirty-five minutes from my driveway, and it took us four hours to reach the turn.

Everyone had heard the earlier sirens my warning had bought, and moved before the road in my memory had filled.

The town's only traffic light had gone to flashing red, and four lanes of cars took turns in a way nobody had agreed on.

The Ground Rules in Tab 7 included a convoy page with call signs.

Number Nine was Lead, the flatbed was Flatbed, and I was Sweep.

"Sweep to Lead," I said into the radio. "Radio check."

Nothing came back but static.

"Sweep to Lead. Say again your position."

"Dad," said Lucy's voice, a long time later. "I can see you."

"Lead, I need you to use the call sign," I said.

"I'm forty feet of yellow bus, and you're in my mirror. You're waving."

"Lead, you've drifted a foot into the left lane."

"I have not," said Lucy.

Then ahead of me, the red brake lights blinked twice.

"Received," I said. "That's not a protocol."

"It's a bus," said Lucy.
